America is in the midst of text messaging mania. According to the latest survey from CTIA –The Wireless Association®, 362.6 billion text messages were reported in 2007, which is more than double the number reported in 2006. This translates into nearly 690,000 text messages per minute!
Text messaging, which is formally known as Short Messaging Service (SMS), equips wireless consumers with a unique safety tool that enables people to respond to emergency situations almost no matter where they are. Text messaging not only makes it easy to stay connected to friends and family, it can also be a life-saver.
Text During Times of Disaster or Emergency:
- The amount of data in a text message is significantly less than that which is in a digital phone call.
- When disasters strike and communications networks might be challenged, or if network coverage is particularly difficult in a remote area, text messages can be the most effective way to communicate via your wireless device.
- There's a time and a place for texting, and behind the wheel is not one of them.
- Be responsible... Don't Text and Drive.
